These teeny tiny Birdbox cabins command spectacular views.
In a time when social distancing has made space and solitude all the more important, it’s pretty useful that these sleek, modernist cabins are available to book, especially since they command breathtaking views of the Norwegian wilderness.
Billed as a ‘Birdbox’—definitely not to be confused with the Netflix film of the same name—the cabins are small but perfectly formed; enough room for a double bed, a sink, a couple of armchairs, and a table. And that’s only if you plump for the Birdbox Medi, since the Mini squeezes just the bed and table into a 3.2 x 2.2 metre space.
The wee cabins have been dreamt up by design company Livit, and engineered to provide shelter and comfort, fitting neatly into the landscape whilst minimising its carbon footprint. They’re built to withstand whatever nature can throw at them, so windswept mountaintops and rain-flecked coasts are no obstacle. It’s a brilliant opportunity to live a hermit-like existence, and I’m already dreaming of the stack of books I could take to while away my hours in such a place.
As you might have guessed, there’s a reason for the rather spartan design and complete disconnect from modern life. The Birdbox is All About The Views: best angled towards a dramatic landscape, one which fills the panoramic windows of your little hideaway with unspoiled beauty. The two which have already been constructed sit neatly amongst the sweeping vistas of Førde in Norway, and each offers a unique getaway.
Perched up in the mountains, Birdbox Langeland is best enjoying during the winter, when one can hop on the skis for a lookaround, and retreat to the safe comfort of your cosy cabin when the cold bites. For views, however, nothing quite beats Birdbox Fauske; from its spot amongst the woods, the cabin looks out across tranquil Førdefjord and the stunning mountain range of Blegja. Perfection, is it not?
Whilst both cabins are currently available to book – Fauske is running up a fee of £140 per night on Airbnb – there is an intriguing third option. Livit can actually sell you a fully prefabricated Birdbox (for a sadly undisclosed fee) that you can then have perched atop your mountain range/wooded hill/dramatic clifftop of choice. I’ll wait right here whilst you mosey off to pick a spot, don’t worry.
Oh, and if you’re wondering about the bathroom situation, don’t fret – they also offer a swish little toilet block, complete with one-way glass for completely uninterrupted views of the scenery. I mean, nature is calling anyway, so you’re going to want to enjoy it even when nature calls…
