Stay in a barrel-shaped room within one of Mexico’s treasured tequila distilleries.
In my experience, there are two types of people in the world: sambuca fans and tequila fans. I’m yet to meet someone who is both. I, for one, would vote ‘tequila’ any day of the week. Which is why I am very excited to have finally found my spiritual home.
A hotel in Tequila, Mexico, offers visitors the chance to stay inside a big barrel within a tequila distillery—dangerously close to the very place the drink was invented. The dreamy Matices, Hotel de Barricas (which literally translates to ‘hotel of barrels’), sits within a field of blue agave, which is used to make tequila.
Inside each room you’ll find all the usual suspects, from air-con and a mini bar, to swanky bathrobes and a TV. And, if you’re feeling extra swish, you can upgrade to an Extra Aged barrel to take advantage of the private jacuzzi.

Tasting sessions and guided tours are available from La Cofradía distillery. These will allow you to witness the distillation process from a distillery that produces 15,000 litres of the spirit every single day. Of course you can also buy a bottle to take back to your barrel, or design your own at the distillery’s ceramics studio.
The site has its very own museum where you can learn even more about the history of the drink, as well as a beautiful cave bar and restaurant, called La Taberna del Cofrade, which is hidden four and a half metres below ground. Here you can expect to be served traditional Mexican food alongside incredible tequila cocktails. I’m totally sold, how about you?
Prices for Matices, Hotel de Barricas start at 3,950 Mexican pesos (around £140) a night and you can book your barrel here.
